Can I try a demo of VDL before purchasing?

No. Virtual Instruments of this type do not typically offer trials. There are large files of sample containers that would first have to be downloaded, and these are not available until you've purchased a license. Bear in mind that the program requires a notation or sequencer program (like Sibelius, Finale, Logic Pro, Cubase, etc.), a decent amount of RAM and a strong processer to run efficiently. Read through the system requirements carefully so you don't get frustrated and have to purchase more for your computer just to make it work. Read through the Knowledgebase and feel free to ask questions. You may also join the Virtual Drumline Users group on Facebook to ask questions of other VDL users.

You can, however, listen to a variety of audio demos of VDL sounds in action by clicking the DEMOS link on the product page.
