Can you trigger the sounds in VDL to record midi using a drum pad?

Yes and no. It depends what you're trying to accomplish.

Because of the number of sounds available in many of the VDL instruments, there can be dozens of midi notes associated with one instrument. For example, the snare line alone has 30+ midi notes associated with it. Even the cowbell has 5+ sounds (tip, shoulder, roll, etc.).

So if you're using a drum pad controller, the pads would need to be assigned to the proper MIDI pitches that correspond to the VDL instrument you're using, which can be tedious since each VDL instrument has its own customized mappings. That's not to say it doesn't work – technically, it does.

If you're entering notes into a notation program like Finale or Sibelius, the most flexible method it to enter using a MIDI keyboard controller like the M-Audio Keystation 49 For accuracy, this sort of entry would be done step-wise and not in real time.
